YET ANOTHER BUSH DIPLOMATIC DISASTER

The Halabja massacre is now prominent among the charges...against Saddam in the Baghdad court...
Saddam has denied these allegations [and] could...create one of the greatest diplomatic disasters the US has ever known. A report prepared by the top CIA official handling the matter says Saddam Hussein was not responsible for the massacre...and this evidence has been in the public domain for more than a year.

The CIA officer Stephen C. Pelletiere...says...the US Defence Intelligence Agency investigated and produced a classified report following the Halabja gassing... "That study asserted that it was Iranian gas that killed the Kurds, not Iraqi gas," he wrote in The New York Times... "The condition of the dead Kurds' bodies...indicated they had been killed with a blood agent...which Iran was known to use. "The Iraqis, who...used mustard gas.., are not known to have possessed blood agents at the time."

Pelletiere writes that these facts have "long been in the public domain but...are rarely mentioned" [and]

"accusing [Saddam] of gassing his own people at Halabja as an act of genocide is not correct..."

[C]rucial claims made in the British Government's Dossier on Iraq...were patently false. "Saddam has used chemical weapons, not only against an enemy state, but against his own people," the Dossier states. "Saddam has used chemical weapons...against Iran and his own people," the Dossier repeats...further on.

"IN 1988 SADDAM ALSO USED MUSTARD AND NERVE AGENTS AGAINST IRAQI KURDS AT HALABJA... HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH [SAYS] UP TO 5000 PEOPLE WERE KILLED"...

THAT IS A BALD-FACED LIE ! ! !...

MOST...CIVILIANS KILLED AT HALABJA...WERE KILLED BY IRANIAN POISON GAS...
The Iranians made a photo-opportunity out of a catastrophe by blaming the deaths on Saddam...and...the media...gobbled [it] up. The first stories claimed...between 80,000 and 100,000 dead, which was obviously phony... You can't kill that many people using gas, in a concentrated period, in terrain such as exists in northern Iraq. In fact, it would be very difficult to kill even 5,000 in this way. The great majority of the victims seen by reporters and observers [at] the scene were blue in their extremities... They were killed by a
BLOOD AGENT...PROBABLY CYANOGEN CHLORIDE OR HYDROGEN CYANIDE.

At Halabja the rebel Kurdish leader, Jalal Talabani, helped Iranian forces infiltrate the town by night. In the morning, the Iranians burst from hiding, overwhelmed the Iraqi garrison, and drove it from the city. The evicted Iraqi commander called in a barrage of mustard gas, and regained possession... Then,

THE IRANIANS DUMPED BLOOD AGENTS ON THE REOCCUPYING IRAQIS AND
THE INNOCENT KURDISH CIVILIANS OF HALABJA WERE CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE

In 1990, Pelletiere, Professor Leif Rosenberger and Lt Colonel Dr Douglas Johnson of the Strategic Studies Institute of the US Army War College wrote "Lessons Learned: The Iran-Iraq War." The report is available HERE. Their study drew on the first-hand knowledge of US defense attachés, CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency analysis, field reports and "signals intelligence"-phone and radio messages sent by the warring armies and picked up by the National Security Agency. This later became the handbook (bible) that was issued to all US military units for strategic/tactical guidance during Operation Desert Storm...

"IT'S BEEN [PUBLIC] MATERIAL FOR OVER 20 YEARS...THERE'S NO WAY [BUSH/BLAIR] CAN PLEAD IGNORANCE OF ITS CONTENTS AND CONCLUSIONS."

BUT...

The truth about WHO REALLY GASSED THE KURDS BACK IN 1988 has not stopped Bush administration lackies from FALSELY BLAMING IT ALL ON IRAQ. As recently as May 2004, Bush supporters are again repeating this BALD-FACED LIE on TV (Rep Duncan Hunter, R-Ca). Unfortunately, the Democrat DID NOT REFUTE THAT LIE and it was broadcast unchallenged.
